After briefly looking around, I found that more people are looking for an answer to this than I anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, given the demand for an answer to this, I thought I\u2019d share my two cents: you <strong>can not<\/strong> create a subtask of a subtask. Jira simply doesn\u2019t offer this functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cHold on, dude!\u201d<\/em> &#8211; you might think to yourself &#8211; <em>\u201cI thought there\u2019s a solution to my question. You literally say that the Jira subtask of a subtask problem is solved in the title.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you\u2019ll be correct in your assumption. Technically, you will not be able to create a subtask of a subtask in a conventional way, but our <a href=\"https:\/\/jirachecklist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jira checklist add-on<\/a> offers a handy workaround.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checklist items as subtasks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to use Smart Checklist for Jira\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hIlwvej1wHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In layman\u2019s terms, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jirachecklist.com\/jira-subtasks-vs-checklists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">subtasks in Jira<\/a> are parts of a more complex task that contain certain attributes such as the description of work that needs to be done, the person responsible for said work, and a deadline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having a checklist in your task&nbsp; &#8211; or subtask for that matter &#8211; can achieve all of the above while also having a series of added benefits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019ll be able to create a simple replacement for a subtask that will have the basic information about the task, some detailed instructions and links you may need to add more context in a collapsible dropdown menu, a deadline, and a responsible person. You\u2019ll also have access to custom statuses such as \u201c<em>done<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>in progress<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>skipped<\/em>\u201d, or \u201c<em>on hold<\/em>\u201d, etc. See the screenshot below for reference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As for the added benefits, you\u2019ll be able to see the progress at a glance from the progress bar both from inside the parent task and from the board view.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, you won\u2019t have to deal with the ever-growing pile of tasks, subtasks, and subtasks for subtasks &#8211; the process and the flow are contained within one parent ticket.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/L2ghLMY03vntiifq62TDES1xLc-dUXRPNu46go9UJ3AQk_t977ZlixuE79oKOf1MPP2De4cNtCpBv0kg3chP_d-BB-2YPtW2TVtoaK5duE-REml2Wdj7XdPhrgMsF-AwOF4SsuGJvq5Ktl0L9zHBats\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The checklist below illustrates the abilities of the workaround. As you can see, there\u2019s room for sharing details or links; you can set custom statuses, tag people, and set deadlines. The progress is visible at a glance from the progress bar.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I add a checklist to my Jira instance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best part about adding the Smart Checklist add-on to your Jira instance is that the process is as easy as pie and only takes a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find the Smart Checklist add-on on the Atlassian marketplace. We have a <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.atlassian.com\/apps\/1216451\/smart-checklist-for-jira-pro?hosting=cloud&amp;tab=overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30-day trial version.<\/a> Check it out.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the add-on from the marketplace.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose the instance you\u2019ll be adding the add-on to.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the button to install Smart Checklist and a pop-up will appear stating that Atlassian will inform you once the Smart Checklist is installed. It shouldn\u2019t take longer than a couple of seconds.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll see the Smart Checklist menu in your ticket once the installation is complete.
